01The idea
Most putts aren’t missed on line. Roughly 80% of three-putts are distance misses: the first putt was hit too hard or too soft. And distance comes down to one thing you control, the speed you give the ball.
Golfers have always trained speed by feel, and feel is hard to practise when you never see a number. The Speed Machine gives every putt one, a Speed Number, so speed becomes something you can measure, repeat and train. The Jarit Method takes it to the course in three steps: Train at home, Calibrate before the round, Execute with one number.
02The machine
The Speed Machine, made by Jarit Golf, is a home putting trainer: a ball-return tower at the end of two side rails, on its own putting mat. You putt from the mat into the machine’s 4-inch opening. It reads the ball’s speed as it rolls in, 16 inches from where you strike it, and sends the ball back to you, so you never leave your spot. That’s about 8 putts a minute.
Two infrared sensors time the ball over a known gap, and that time gives its speed.
- Reads every putt’s speed, to a tenth, as a Speed Number (03).
- Sends each reading to the Jarit App on your iPhone or iPad over Bluetooth, the moment you putt.
- Returns the ball to you after every putt.
- A 4-inch opening, so a putt has to be on line to go in: your line stays honest while you train speed.
- Needs 4 × 3 feet of floor to use, with the mat: a bedroom, an office or the corner of a room.
- Rechargeable by USB-C, with the cable in the box and a standard USB-C charger. A charge lasts about 6 hours of putting.
- About 18 × 6 × 8 inches stored, and 6 lb.
- Patent pending.
The machine has no screen of its own. Every Speed Number shows in the Jarit App, so you need the app to train.
03The Speed Number
A Speed Number is the Speed Machine’s reading of a putt: how fast the ball is rolling when the machine reads it, on Jarit’s own scale from 3 to 15, to a tenth. 3 is a delicate touch putt; 15 is a full-power lag. It isn’t a standard unit of speed, so it’s said bare: “an 8”, “shaky at 14”, “you wanted 8.0, you got 8.6”. It’s a training scale, built for practice, not a certified measurement of speed.
The same distance can need very different numbers. In the home page’s example, a 10-foot putt across a 3% slope on a fast green, the uphill putt needs about a 7 and the downhill one about a 4. The distance never changed; the speed did.
And the same number rolls different distances on different greens: in the home page’s example, a trained 8 rolls about 12 feet on soft greens and 18 on fast ones. Your numbers stay the same; calibration (09) matches them to each day’s greens.
04The app
The training lives in the Jarit App for iPhone and iPad. The machine gives you the number; the app turns it into a program built around you. The app is free, with no subscription.
The Jarit App is coming to the App Store soon. Until it’s there, it installs through TestFlight, Apple’s free app for trying apps before their release: open the Jarit App on TestFlight on your iPhone or iPad, install TestFlight if it asks, then install the Jarit App.
- Connects to the machine over Bluetooth, shows when it’s live, and reads the machine’s battery level.
- Runs the program (05) block by block. When a block ends, the next starts on its own after a short countdown, so your hands stay on the putter.
- Reads from the putt: every live screen is built to be read from 5–6 feet away while you stand over the ball, with big target numbers.
- The Combine: a scored game across the whole range, also part of the program’s competition track.
- Keeps your stats: a permanent record of every putt (08), synced with iCloud, so it survives a reinstall or a new phone.
It runs on iPhone and iPad, with iOS 18.6 or iPadOS 18.6 or later. Android is planned.
05The training program
The program is 30 tracks. Each track is one session of about 5 to 12 minutes and 20 to 80 putts, made of short blocks. It starts with a single speed, a 3, and adds one new Speed Number at a time, up to 15. From 10 up, each new number gets its own consolidation track before the next arrives, because the firmer speeds take longer to own.
Practice is cumulative: once a number is introduced, every later track comes back to it, so nothing you’ve learned fades.
The four zones
| Zone | Speed Numbers | In zone within | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touch | 3–6 | ±0.5 | Soft touch putts over short distances |
| Moderate | 7–9 | ±0.5 | Medium-distance putts |
| Firm | 10–12 | ±0.6 | Firmer putts over longer distances |
| Power | 13–15 | ±0.7 | The longest putts |
The window widens a little as the numbers climb, so every zone is about equally demanding in real terms. A target of 8 counts anything from 7.5 to 8.5.
The four phases
| Phase | Tracks | What it builds |
|---|---|---|
| Touch and Moderate | 1–11 | Speed Numbers 3 to 9 |
| Firm | 12–19 | Adds 10 to 12 |
| Power | 20–27 | Adds 13 to 15 |
| High-pressure transfer | 28–30 | Random targets under pressure, two Combine rounds back to back, and the final gate |
Kinds of block
- Exploration: putt at whatever feels natural while the app takes its first reading of your stroke.
- Blocked: one number, rep after rep, to anchor a new speed.
- Warm-up: the numbers you know, slow to fast.
- Alternating and sequence: switch between two numbers, or climb through several in order, to feel the gaps between them.
- Cumulative: a random mix of every number learned so far, weighted toward your weak ones.
- Make-in-a-row: hit a number in zone several times running; a miss resets the count.
- Ladder: up through the numbers and back down, with no reset.
- Reactive: the next target depends on your last putt. Miss and you go again at the same number; hit it and the number changes.
- Combine: a full scored round across every number.
- Gate tests and assessments: the checkpoints (06).
- Cool-down, and a free-practice celebration at the end of the program.
06Gate tests
Five gate tests decide when you’ve earned the next zone. A gate is a fixed set of putts that the adaptive coach never changes, and you pass by putting enough of them in zone. The tracks before each gate add pressure on purpose, with make-in-a-row and ladder blocks.
| Track | Gate | Putts | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Touch | 3 each at 3, 4, 5 and 6 | 8 of 12 in zone. Unlocks 7 |
| 11 | Moderate | 4 each at 7, 8 and 9 | 8 of 12. Unlocks 10 |
| 19 | Firm | 4 each at 10, 11 and 12 | 8 of 12. Unlocks 13 |
| 27 | Power | 4 each at 13, 14 and 15, then an assessment across every zone | 7 of 12. Unlocks the last phase |
| 30 | Final mastery | 2 each at 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13 and 14 | 11 of 16. Completes the program |
Miss a gate and you can retry it straight away.
07The adaptive coach
The app remembers every putt you hit and builds each session around your weak spots. In the blocks that allow it, it picks how often each target comes up from your record at that Speed Number:
| Your accuracy at a number | How often it comes up |
|---|---|
| Under 60% | About 3 times as often |
| 60–75% | About twice as often |
| 75–90% | As usual |
| Over 90% | About half as often |
So if you’re shaky at 14, you’ll see 14 about three times as often, without the block getting longer or its rules changing. The coach never changes a block’s length, rules or zone windows, never touches gate tests or assessments, and never gives the same number more than 3 times in a row. Numbers you haven’t practised yet don’t come up at all. Cool-downs lean the other way, toward your strong numbers.
08Your stats
Your stats are kept apart from the program: a lifetime record of every putt, in training and in the Combine. Resetting the program leaves them alone.
- For each Speed Number: accuracy (how often you land in zone), tendency (whether you leave it short or run it long), consistency (how tightly your putts group), your current and best streaks, and when you last practised it.
- A dashboard with a speed ladder and a “Needs work” callout that points at your weakest number.
- Trends in accuracy, deviation and volume over 7, 30 or 90 days, or all time.
- Every session, putt by putt, and every Combine score.
09Calibrate to the greens
Your Speed Numbers don’t change: an 8 is an 8 for life. What changes from course to course, and day to day, is how far an 8 rolls. Five minutes on the practice green before the round matches your numbers to the day’s greens. It’s a routine you run yourself, no app needed.
- Baseline: hit a few putts at a number you own (a 5 works well) and watch how far they roll. That tells you how fast today’s greens are.
- Distance to number: pick a distance, give it a number from your baseline, putt it and see where it finishes. Adjust, and repeat at a few distances.
- Number to distance: the other way round. Pick a number, set the ball where you think that number is perfect, and check.
10Execute on the course
On the course you read the putt as you always have: break, slope, distance, green speed. Then you turn the read into one Speed Number, stand over the ball with only that number in your head, and putt it. One word where the noise used to be: your number.
11The science
The program is built on motor-learning research:
- Cumulative practice: every track revisits every speed learned so far, so none of them decays (Schmidt and Lee, Motor Control and Learning).
- Challenge point: a new speed is practised on its own; once it’s acquired it joins random practice across everything you’ve learned, so the difficulty keeps matching you (Guadagnoli and Lee, 2004).
- Contextual interference: random practice feels harder in the session but improves retention and transfer to the course (Shea and Morgan, 1979).
- Schema theory: practice across the whole range builds one general putting skill rather than 13 separate strokes (Schmidt, 1975).
- Pressure transfer: make-in-a-row and ladder blocks before each gate train you to perform under stress (Beilock and Carr, 2001).
